SIMPLE TOOLS TO ACCESS

A MEANINGFUL WORLD

T

RESEARCH

Decorative circular pattern of radiating lines

Research at Significant Design brings together art, science and regenerative design to investigate how territories, societies and the living world transform — and how new regenerative possibilities can emerge from these transformations. Our research develops through dialogue, experimentation and the confrontation of different forms of knowledge. It connects theoretical inquiry with situated experience, bringing researchers, practitioners, artists and communities into conversation.

SD LAB

Regeneration SD Lab

The Regeneration SD Lab is an experimental research space developed in Portugal for collective inquiry into regenerative practices. It brings together knowledge, territories and lived experience through open conversations, encounters and situated experimentation.

The programme is currently developed in Portuguese, reflecting its engagement with Portuguese territories, communities and networks.

COLLOQUIUM

Trends for Future Cities

Trends for Future Cities is an international research colloquium bringing together theoretical and applied perspectives to question contemporary territorial transformations and explore possible futures for cities. The colloquium is organised in collaboration with the Department of Urban Planning at Universidade Lusófona, creating a space for dialogue between academic research, professional practice and concrete urban and territorial situations.

PUBLICATIONS

Research articles, papers and publications developed by Significant Design and its collaborators, connecting theoretical reflection, experimentation and territorial practice.

RESEARCH

LEARN

Knowledge grows when it is shared.

Learning at Significant Design is conceived as an open process of transmission, experimentation and exchange between research, teaching and practice. It brings together knowledge developed through university teaching, research, workshops and field experience, while progressively opening this space to researchers, artists, designers and practitioners who wish to share their own approaches and experiences.

BLOG

The Significant Design Blog is a space for sharing research, experiences, reflections and practices emerging from the intersections between art, science and regenerative design.

TOOLS

Listen → Connect → Experiment → Regenerate → Inspire → Transform

RESIGNIFY — To see differently, to act differently — Each tool opens a path — from listening to meaning, from care to regeneration.
Re-signifying means shifting perspective — transforming how we perceive, design, and inhabit the world.
It is the invisible thread connecting all the tools: understanding before acting, creating before consuming, regenerating before replacing.

1. TO OBSERVE
AND LISTEN

→ The first gesture is attention.
Mapping emotions, flows, and local ecologies through Living Labs and participatory observation. Understanding what the territory tells us — its stories, memories, and invisible dynamics.

4. TO REGENERATE

→ To repair is to re-signify.
Moving beyond sustainability: restoring ecosystems, relationships, and symbolic bonds between humans and the living world. Regeneration as care — of soils, of species, and of ourselves.

2. TO CONNECT
AND CO-CREATE

→ Meaning emerges between beings.
Building bridges between citizens, artists, designers, scientists, and municipalities. Designing with communities, not for them — cultivating shared belonging and local intelligence.

5. TO INSPIRE
AND COMMUNICATE

→ Art is a language of transformation.
Art as a vector of awareness and social change. Exhibitions, videos, and design activism awaken ecological consciousness and collective imagination.

3. TO EXPERIMENT

→ Doing is a form of thinking.
Prototyping, testing, and iterating in real contexts. From eco-materials to nature-based solutions, each prototype explores how design can restore life.

6. TO TRANSFORM AND SCALE

→ From gestures to systems.
From local prototypes to transferable models. Developing open-source toolkits and regenerative methodologies for communities and public institutions.
